Planning Summer Family Photos in Grand Teton: What You Need to Know Now
There’s something truly special about summer family photos in Grand Teton. The long, golden evenings, the wildflowers in bloom, and those towering peaks in the background—it all makes for the most magical setting to capture memories with the people you love most. If you're dreaming of a fun, relaxed photo session surrounded by nature (and maybe a few giggles along the way), summer is the perfect season to make it happen.
In this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan your dream summer photo session in Grand Teton—from when to book and what to wear, to keeping the kiddos happy and finding the best family-friendly spots in Jackson Hole.
Hi! I’m Roslyn—a Jackson Hole family photographer who believes your session should feel just as meaningful as the memories you’re making. From golden light to giggles in the wildflowers, I’ll help you plan a relaxed, joyful experience that captures your family just as you are. Take a peek at my portfolio, and let’s make this summer one to remember.
Why Summer is a Magical Time for Family Photos in the Tetons
Summer in the Tetons feels like a dream—especially when you're surrounded by mountain views, clear blue skies, and meadows full of wildflowers. It's one of the best times of year for summer family photos because the weather is warm, the days are long, and everything is so full of life.
The mountains are still capped with snow in early summer (which looks stunning in the background), and by mid to late summer, the wildflowers and green fields really shine. The light is soft and golden in the evenings, perfect for those glowing, natural-looking portraits that feel warm and full of love.
Plus, summer is when families are already planning vacations to Jackson Hole, so it’s a great time to schedule a photo session while you're making those memories together. Whether you're hiking, floating the Snake River, or just enjoying a picnic, it’s a season full of connection and joy—exactly what I love to capture.
When to Book + What Time of Day Is Best
If you're thinking about summer family photos in Grand Teton, it's best to book early—especially for July and August, which are the most popular months. I recommend reaching out at least 2–3 months in advance if you have specific dates in mind, especially if you're visiting from out of town.
As for the best time of day, golden hour is where the magic happens. That’s the hour right after sunrise or just before sunset, when the light is soft, warm, and flattering (trust me, it makes a big difference in your photos). I usually suggest evening sessions because kids tend to do better after a day of adventure, and we can take advantage of those long summer evenings when the sun sets around 8:30–9:00 pm.
Morning sessions can work too, especially for families with early risers. The light is a bit cooler but still beautiful, and popular locations are often quieter early in the day.
No matter which time you choose, we’ll work together to make sure the lighting, location, and timing all fit your family’s needs and schedule.
After your summer family photos, treat your crew to a delicious meal everyone will love. Check out my favorite Family-Friendly Places to Eat in Jackson Hole—from casual bites to spots with space for kids to roam.
What to Wear for Summer Family Photos
Choosing what to wear for your summer family photos doesn’t have to be stressful—think comfort, movement, and soft colors that complement the natural beauty of Grand Teton. Here are some quick tips to help you plan your outfits:
Stick to light, neutral, or earthy tones. Soft blues, creams, sage green, blush, and tan all photograph beautifully against the mountains and meadows.
Avoid loud patterns or big logos. These can be distracting and take the focus away from your family's faces and connection.
Flowy dresses and linen shirts are perfect for summer. They move gently with the breeze and look great on camera.
Comfort is key, especially for kids. Make sure outfits aren’t too tight or itchy. If they feel good, they’ll look good (and be much happier).
Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a color palette and let each person’s outfit fit within it. This keeps the look cohesive without being too matchy.
Bring layers or accessories. A hat, a denim jacket, or a light cardigan can add variety and personality to your photos.

How to Make the Session Kid-Friendly
Kids are full of energy (and surprises!), which makes family sessions so fun and real. Here’s how we can keep your summer family photos relaxed, playful, and totally kid-approved:
Keep expectations low and joy high: The best photos often happen when kids are just being themselves—playing, exploring, or even being a little silly.
Bring snacks (maybe!) and water: I always suggest a good meal beforehand to keep everyone happy and photo-ready. Snacks can help older kids recharge, but for little ones, snacks can sometimes backfire (think meltdowns when they don’t get the whole bag or sticky fingers mid-photo), so it’s often best to hold off!
Plan around their best time of day: Whether it’s after a nap or before dinner, let’s aim for a time when your kids are happiest and most rested.
Pack a favorite toy or comfort item: A small stuffed animal or blanket can be a great comfort (and sometimes even sneak into a few sweet shots).
Let them explore: We’ll build in time for little adventures—picking wildflowers, tossing rocks into a stream, or running through a field makes for genuine smiles.
Don’t stress the chaos: Some of my favorite images are the in-between moments—the ones where real life shines through. I’ll gently guide your family while keeping things light and fun.
I want this to feel more like a fun outing than a posed photo session—because when kids are happy, magic happens!
Family-Friendly Summer Activities in Jackson Hole
One of the best parts about planning summer family photos in Grand Teton is that it can be part of a bigger adventure. Jackson Hole is packed with fun, family-friendly activities that turn your photo session into just one highlight of an amazing day (or week!).
Before or after your session, you can explore scenic spots like Jenny Lake, take a wildlife tour through the park, or ride the Aerial Tram for jaw-dropping views. If your kids love animals, the Jackson Hole Rodeo and the National Elk Refuge are always a hit. Want something more relaxed? Grab ice cream in downtown Jackson, stroll the wooden boardwalks, or let the little ones run free at one of the local parks.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Photo Experience
The most important thing to remember during your summer family photos is to relax and enjoy the moment. When you're having fun and connecting with your family, the photos naturally reflect that. Try not to worry too much about perfect poses or forced smiles—some of the most meaningful images come from little glances, big belly laughs, or spontaneous hugs.
Before your session, make sure everyone is well-rested and fed (yes, even grown-ups!). Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and arrive at the location a little early if you can. That way, you're not feeling rushed, and we can start off with calm, happy energy. If something doesn't go exactly as planned—whether it's a little dirt on a dress or a toddler on the move—that's totally okay. Life is beautifully imperfect, and your photos will be too.
And finally, trust me to guide you. I’ve photographed dozens of families in the Tetons, and I know how to make the experience smooth, natural, and fun from start to finish. My goal is to create images that feel like you—full of love, connection, and that unmistakable summer magic.
